Abstract
A common cause of deep neck infection is an oral cavity problem. However, other causes should be excluded, such as chronic otitis media. We report a 41-year-old male with cholesteatoma complicated by chronic otitis media, lateral sinus thrombosis (LST), thrombophlebitis of the ipsilateral internal jugular vein and deep neck infection. This spread route was associated with the direction of gravity along the adjacent blood vessels. Here we describe in detail the origin and the extent of the diseases with thin-slice computed tomography scans, magnetic resonance images, and intraoperative findings. The findings included deep neck infection shown with multiple abscess pockets, and we concluded that otogenic LST caused by chronic otitis media and resulting segmental mural lysis of the infected internal jugular vein to be responsible for the development of deep neck abscess formation.
